car hauler to avoid
Beware of Stateway Auto Transport. They took my $695 deposit but didn't schedule a pickup, then wouldn't refund my deposit.

Never heard of "Stateway"; they must be a local, or regional company, and obviously, not an honest one. Moral is: use a name brand national company or at least one that T owners have used and mentioned on this forum.

Re: car hauler to avoid
Just Google them. They are a BROKER, and don't even have any trucks. They have bad reviews going back 6 years. As a broker, they sell you a transport deal, and THEN THEY TRY TO FIND SOMEONE TO DO THE TRIP, IF THEY CAN. If they can't, you are just out your deposit, or whatever money you gave them up front, and they will tell you to go fly a kite.

Re: car hauler to avoid
So let me understand this a tad more. You contracted with a company that won't refund your money -AND you live about 10 miles away from their address? Have you paid them a visit?? Will local law enforcement not get involved??? Have an attorney send a demand letter or file a complaint in Civil court against them. If no response, have your AG get involved. I realize you live in a very 'left-slanted' state where Prosecutor does not always want to prosecute unlawful individuals, but surely there is more that can be done other than posting on a forum that likely would never use their services anyway.

They’re 10 miles away? Go see them and deal with them directly. Tell them the deal off and see what they say.

Re: car hauler to avoid
I guess I would never make it to the "big time" if I was wealthy enough to buy cars far from home. If I buy something like a car, I am going to haul the durn thing myself. It is difficult to find someone that won't take shortcuts I find offensive when handling something i pay good money for.
If you can't help em, don't hinder em'

Re: car hauler to avoid
Martin, thank you for your post and the heads up regarding this transport broker. Even though a couple of the posts here are more of that this is what I do right and you are doing wrong kind of posts, I'm sure most of the club members appreciate the info.
This was touched on briefly but I would emphasize that you contact your State AG consumer complaint division if you are unable to resolve this with the broker agency. Best of luck.

Re: car hauler to avoid
I used Montway (also a broker) to move a pickup from Massachusetts to Florida. Other then the trucker showing up four days late - time wasn't an issue for me at that point - I thought that they did a great job. Had there been a time issue they would have heard from me big time.

Re: car hauler to avoid
There use to be a reality show on TV that was about a mover, broker. I remember watching it and the way the broker located and used a mover was kind of questionable. They had people they would use and the broker sent out the information and see who was best qualified and could do it in the wanted time frame. Some did OK and others didn’t. After watching it for a while I thought that wasn’t the best way to get something moved that was really valuable. My opinion.

Re: car hauler to avoid
I have used Mercury Auto Transport twice for arranging enclosed Model T and Model A transportation. They provided quick, excellent service in finding a carrier. One from LA area and the other from the tip of the tail of Massachusetts. The quoted prices were reasonable too. I can provide the contact information for the broker that I worked with at Mercury both times if someone needs transportation. Email me through the forum. No PM please.

Re: car hauler to avoid
Why don't you use a PROFESSIONAL car hauler like Reliable, Intercity or Passport? They do charge more but they are insured, reputable and professional. If you use an "independent" or a "broker" you'll get what you deserve!!

I was very happy using Passport going from Nebraska to Ca. A bit cheaper than other large transporters. They sent a link to the trucks GPS.
I followed progress daily. Friendly, good people. I highly recommend.

Re: car hauler to avoid
I recently had a vehicle moved from the Saint Louis area to the Dallas area by a company called “You Move Me” they are a home mover that has a vehicle division. I thought the price was fair $950ish, and the scheduled pick up and delivery was exactly what they promised. They are a nationwide company, fully insured. I would use them again anytime.

Guy, the only exception I would say to your spot-on advice is there is one independant that many hobbyist have used that is about as good as they come. His name is Bill Squires -and he is out of northern Ohio. I have used him numerous times to haul my customer's vehicles, and he does exactly what he promises. Heck, he even hauled a car for Ron Patterson

Re: car hauler to avoid
The shipping business is very broker oriented. And yes it works like this . . . you enter a Google search and get something like Uship or some other broker and they quote a rate, usually high, but it trickles down until you accept it. Then they shop around to find hungry truckers who will trnasport your item. Usually the broker gets some money upfront and you pay the balance in cash to the trucker upon arrival. But the trucker has no obligations to meet the promises the broker made and the broker got paid so it's between you and the trucker. It's a very hit/miss industry.
And, if you Google appliance repair, plumber, electrician, etc., you will get Top 10 Best plumbers in your area. And, when you call, you guessed it, unknown to you, you get a referral service that puts you in touch with a plumber for a referral fee from them, but you end up with the lowest bidder plumber, not the Top 10 in your area.
The days of the Yellow Pages are long gone. It's a brave new world out there, and not always for the best.

Why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways?
A bunch of old cars
Sometimes they run.
Sometimes, they don't.

Yup, that's about the sum of it. At work, we use a broker for our freight. It saves us a lot of money. The broker, however, deals with known, reputable freight carriers. You can save a lot of money, not because they've found a shoddy carrier, but instead, because a carrier has a half-empty truck "going your way". Also, the broker lists all possible carriers, along with their rates, so you can pick & choose.signsup wrote: ↑Thu Aug 22, 2024 7:22 pmThe shipping business is very broker oriented. I take my transporting business very seriously & since I am heavily addicted to this hobby....I treat everyone else's babies just like I would mine.
As most of you already know, I have taken a leave of absence from the road until at least the 1st of Oct. to help my lovely wife Laura battle her stage 4 cancer. I am always available to offer advice & give names & numbers for gentlemen I trust 100% with my customer overflow. Even when I am running full bore, I get 6-10 inquiries per day & cannot possibly handle 10% of those folks that want me to do their transports, hence the reason I vetted these other gentlemen !
Seriously though, you really have to be careful. Brokers (for the most part) do nothing more than take your info & put it on Central Dispatch taking the lowest bid to do your job regardless of the quality of the actual transporter. The biggest problem is that you cannot tell which brokers care & which ones don't.
God Bless
Bill

Re: car hauler to avoid
I have bought cars out of state in Arkansas and Nebraska, and hauled both of them home on my own trailer. I also bought one here in Kansas and brought it home the same way. For the Fordor in the Phoenix area I stopped on the way home from California by Suburban, rented a U-Haul trailer and hauled the car home. I am not an expert, but I would not buy a car sight unseen. The only thing I would do differently is take my own hold-down straps for the Arizona car, as the U-Haul wheel nets were memorably useless. Otherwise, my own open trailer and the open U-Haul proved perfectly adequate. I realize that self-hauling is not for everybody, but so far it has worked for me.
The inevitable often happens.

I've had Bill Squires haul 2 different cars long distances with an enclosed trailer. In both cases he did exactly as he promised, at the stated price, and was on-time literally to the minute. (Spokane to Texas and Delaware to Texas)

I too have used Bill Squires and would gladly do so again. Bill, so sorry your wife is facing such a difficult medical situation.
A friend has used "others" and the report was less than favorable. Buyer beware I guess.

Re: car hauler to avoid
Bill Squires is the go to guy for auto hauling. He does what He says He will do. When He says He will do it. For a fair price You pay when the car is delivered. No up front money. No Hocus Pocus on delivery schedule. If He says it will be at Your delivery address on a certain date. You can rest assured it will be there. Bill Shown in photo delivering open express from Tennessee to Texas. There are a bunch of auto transporters out there. some good some not so good but Bill is the gold standard.
