WTB: 16-27 Franklin Steering Box

Post by Shane Lach » Fri Apr 26, 2024 8:51 pm

I'm hunting for an early Franklin steering box for a 27 Roadster project I'm building currently. If you have anything I would really appreciate it! Thanks

Is that similar to the Sprague steering?

It is a similar worm gear style yes. The internals look like this.

I have one that I purchased for a Big Car project that I would sell. Do you want me to bring it to Luray in a few weeks?

Hey Brent I can't make it to Luray but could you reach out via email, text, or phone call? Thanks!

How would it be adapted for a Model T?

Hey Gary the Franklin box was used in a lot of center steer race cars of the day. They would weld extensions onto them to mount to the frame and extend out of the cowl. I'm building a sprint inspired 27 T on an Essex chassis and am hoping to do a cowl steering setup on it via a Franklin box.

Gary,
This shows a typical pair of brackets to mount center steering box, either Franklin or Model A Ford, to a Model T based race car. The drag link would go beside the frame to the left front wheel.
This cut is from a Gallivan catalog.

I have a center mount Franklin steering assembly which is now surplus since I purchased the 1915 Gallivan twin overhead cam roadster. I can provide photos, and demotions if needed.
