Firewall oil can mounting?

I have a nice can and mount for my 23 TT. Searching past threads it seems it mounts to the right "passenger" side of the choke. What bolts would have been used for this?

Dallas, my guess would be flathead screws, nuts and lock washers.

Our firewall is wood so obviously it uses wood screws BUT one could use a machine screw with nut.

They're not all the same. This is the one I put in my runabout.

I've had it for years and have no clue where I got it. There was just one hole with a short vertical bolt for mounting.

I made a mounting bracket from 2" angle iron and screwed it to the firewall. The bracket has a threaded hole for the mounting bolt which I didn't take time to shorten.

A top view shows the round headed bolt attaching the holder to the bracket. I plan to make a can holder for my touring using a mouse trap spring.

I've never seen evidence Ford ever supplied an oil can holder, only the oil can.

So you can mount where ever you like, fits, and is handy.

On model Ts, all those oil can holders were after-market. Ford did not supply them. So, they got mounted in many places, many ways, and often using whatever bolts, screws, or nuts were available at the time.
Some other marques did provide them from the factory.

Fascinating thread.. I had assumed they were factory items. What about tool boxes? Aftermarket also? It just seems so natural on the car.

Thank you guys for the info and photos. Since my TT has an aftermarket cab, bed , aux. transmision, frame extension,mirrors and explosion proof muffler muffler I guess the can holder will be ok. I will mount it with period hardware. Its great to have all input from the forum members on these things as I am fairly new to this T thing. I do like to keep them period correct . It just adds to the experience for me.

What about tool boxes? Aftermarket also?

I thought so until last week, when I found a tool box (9x9x21) listed in Ford tools for 1913-1914. Of course there were lots of aftermarket boxes too.

After many years being around and presently owning three T’s I thought Ford supplied the oil can holders along with the oil can. I can remember seeing a Ford oil can and firewall holder being sold as a set a few years ago on EBay.
I guess just assuming ‘a set’ would mean both were Ford.
Thanks for my enlightenment that assuming is not always right!

So did a Ford oil can come when buying a new T or was it a dealer supplied item a new owner would have the oppurinity to buy. Thanks!

I had one on the wood firewall of my old speedster. It always seemed to leak. I wondered if it was a bad fitting top or just vibration.

I have noted oil can + holder on many different brands of vehicles. They were mounted on both R and L side of motor, seemed quite random. I have also seen a double oil can holder mounted on the frame (under the hood) on a 1912 Hudson.
