23 inch 5 lug demonstrable rims

Post by BlackTinLizzie » Sat Nov 15, 2025 7:05 pm

I just picked up some Model T parts and there were 4 23 inch rims but they have 5 lugs. One of the rims has a Buffalo Cord Dunlop 31X4 smooth tire on it. Are these for Model T rims? All the Model t wheels i have are 4 lug

Possible that they could have been for after-market wheels for a model T. Or not.

You say "smooth" tire? Do you mean worn to treadless? Or smooth never had a tread (common on tires before 1920)? Or smooth (straight?) sided tire as in not a clincher?

Are the five lugs fixed (attached?) to the rim?

There were several accessory demountable wheel manufactures before Ford got into the game.

Accessory Firestone wood felloe demountable wheels and pretty sure the Atlas steel spoke wheels had 5 lug demountable rims… but don’t believe either had lugs fixt to the rims. Interesting…

Photos show those 5 lug rims to be for straight sided tires, as they are 'split rims'.

Likely for a larger car with wood demountable wheels.

Definitely not for T models, on two counts. Ford always used four lug rims. Secondly, the only split rims Ford did use were 21' rims on the 26-7 cars.
