Side mount on a ‘25 pickup

“Original” Smith just installed a side-mounted spare on his 1925 roadster pickup. Looks sharp, almost sporting - and really changes the look of the car.

Me wonders how stable the tire sits. I dont see an upper attachment to the body. Maybe well hidden.
Clean & attractive as expected.

looks like it is held in place by using the inner bolts that bolt the running board and the fender in place. Neat work, requiring no new holes. Extra support/stability could be had by extending the lower mounting base to utilise the outer bolts also, again drilling no new holes.
It sure beats making a mounting from scratch.

I see the struts going to the body above the splash aprons. Thats the extra attachment that limits the wiggle. Good show.

Being an Original Smith car, I hesitate(Not really) to point out that the spare is mounted incorrectly on this carrier.

Would image Larry found a NOS Accessory Rim and tire carrier of this brand.

Or made a copy of one? Likely his is an original accessory, can see the angle channel iron for the uprights, just like the accessory.

Sure is very practical without harming the sheet metal or drilling added holes.

And for safe keeping of that expensive tire and rim, add a padlock

How's that, John ? I was always learned to have the stem pointing down to prevent water entering.

Actually upper rim lugs should be evenly spaced to the mount ears on the topside. turn the rim CCW about 45 degrees. The stem would left of center.
There is a clamp that holds the rim in (not thru a mounting lug)

The nut holds the clamp in place. Above is a hole & slot matching the carrier mount as you see there. The hole & slot are meant for a padlock.

What a neat piece. I thought Larry might have made modifications to an original rear carrier. But, your advertisement shows the exact piece.
It appears the accessory manufacturer modified a ford carrier with different bracketing to mount on the running board. That looks like a ford carrier complete with license plate & tail light mount. What a nice find.
