Youth suggestion- thanks to John Regan

A number of years ago my son learned to drive at a MTFCI Annual tour. I took him to the empty fairgrounds across the street and he learned the basics in about 20 minutes. Then he drove one leg of our tour for that day, about 25 miles. He received a Jimmy Walker award for this.

John Regan came up with the Jimmy Walker award. I will let John explain how it started.

Basically if a young person drives one leg of a tour, he/she receives an award. This does not have to be done on the Annual tour. Any club can start doing this. If my son was not with me and another person had asked me to let their child drive, I might have said yes. They do not have to go 35mph. If they are comfortable at 20mph, so be it. No one rushes in a Model T.

Just something for each club to think about.

I think that is a great idea.
I tried to insure my son through one of the Antique Insurance companies when he got his drivers license in the mid 90s. They told me he couldn't be insured until he was 30 something. National club leaders including a rep. from that company assured me that was wrong but they still wouldn't insure a young fellow. He was eager to drive then but hasn't developed an interest in the cars even at the age of 39. I hope that is not the case today.

Presume by young person, you mean anyone under 60? Great idea, we are thinking the same thing in the military vehicle hobby. If we don't get the next generation involved, it will wither and die.
I am insured by J.C. Taylor and the age limit is 25. We couldn't insure our vehicles with them while our son was living with us even if he never drove the vehicles. Now that he is 26, we went with them. Don't know if other insurance companies have similar restrictions.

We are restoring a 27 Depot Hack that might be our first T that we feel comfortable doing a short tour with. I do not drive myself, so I would have to get my son to drive. If he was recognized for his effort, it would be a nice touch. Good idea that just needs to be fleshed out a little.

I tease him that if we dress in period clothing, he will have to wear knickers. Didn't go over real well. here he is with our War Wagon.
