Wondering about mileage

Post by Rich Bingham » Wed May 27, 2020 8:53 pm

Just pondering the imponderable. Think of it ! Over fifteen million Model Ts rolling through almost one hundred and twelve years of history to date. Does anyone dare to estimate the number of miles they have traveled ? (So far ! We ain’t done yet !)

Even at the conservative annual average (20,000 miles) a person who has been driving for fifty years could easily have logged a million miles !

I think the modern average is something like 12,000 to 15,000 miles per year. I doubt the average miles per year up to at least the 1950's was anywhere close to that.

While I am not going to make a guess, I would say most of those 15,000,000 traveled in the 100's of miles per year or very low 1000 range. Even when I commuted to work, it was 40 mile round trip and even with weekend driving would still have put me in the 12,000 per year range. Just because people had a car didn't mean they traveled 60-100 miles each way like some do now, nor did they drive everyday. People in towns/cities walked, took the bus or such. Farmers were busy farming so didn't have time to run into town unless something was needed or Saturday shopping trip.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Rich: OK, I will bite. It's 1.125 Trillion miles. Others may have more accurate data, please share.

I think another interesting 'fact' would be how many Model T miles, and Model T passenger miles were logged by year, 1908 to present.

Drive careful, jb
