Vaporizer rebuild
I am new to Model T's, I just bought a 27 Coupe that is mostly all original. I am trying to get it started after it has sat for some time. The vaporizer needs a rebuild; I heard a gentleman named Russ Potter is well known for his rebuilds and knowledge. Is he still rebuilding these?

Re: Vaporizer rebuild
Welcome to the Model T world. You'll hear both pros and cons on vaporizer carbs but I have one and rebuilt it myself with parts from Snyders. If you explore the forum you will see the home page with a vendor listing and it is a great place to find parts.

Re: Vaporizer rebuild
I am usually involved with Model A's, so I have some applicable experience with T's. The problem with my vaporizer is that I do not want to try to get the brass seats and needle assemblies out, they are stuck. There is also a hole in the casting inside on the tip of the 6279 needle. I really need somebody who is more experienced with these things than I am.

Re: Vaporizer rebuild
I hesitate to suggest this but have had nothing but success with it over the years. I have restored a number of Fordson tractors and Model T autos and was stuck in the same situation with the brass being tight in the castings one time. I just happened to be talking on the phone with Duane Helman from Rosewood machine at the time and he told me to heat the carb to nearly red hot and then quickly quench it in cold water. I was appalled at his advice but he assured me that it would not blow up or crack. I tried it and found that the jets etc. could almost be removed with my fingers afterward. I have done it a half a dozen times or so over the years with the same result. Just be certain that there are no parts remaining on or in the casting that would be destroyed by the heat like aluminum or pot metal venturis, springs, etc.. Proceed carefully or disregard the information altogether. Not a recommendation -just an anecdote. Probably set the forum on fire.

"Probably set the forum on fire" Not by or many others that use the same fire trick.

I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

I do not like to reprint someone else's phone number.
Go to the classified section. Search for Potter. 4th post down has his phone number.

Re: Vaporizer rebuild
Heating it up a bit and quenching it will make it easy to remove. Even with a propane or nap gas torch. It does not need to be red hot. If it does not work, just try again. I have a few vaporizer carbs, if you need some parts.

Re: Vaporizer rebuild
I see his phone number, thanks. I think I am better off finding a different casting as mine has the hole in it. It is not worth repairing when there is a fair amount of vaporizers lying around.

Re: Vaporizer rebuild
I have a Russ Potter rebuild from many years ago that never was installed or used. I sold that particular Model T before the carburetor was sent back and it has been hanging on my office wall ever since. I’ll sell for $150 plus postage which is a super duper price. Contact me through this forum if you are interested.

Re: Vaporizer rebuild
I have a list of 3 folks who want it if Tyler did not need it so it goes to the first who contacted me.
Like others I have so much extra Model A and Model T parts I will never use it’s best to give them a good home where they will be useful. A few spare parts are necessary but hoarding does not help the hobby…..
