large u-joint grease cup

Post by bobt » Thu Apr 30, 2020 6:06 am

My friend and I were working on our Ts yesterday and while he was lubing the large grease cup on the U-joint he noticed the large prong? in the center of the cap and wondered what it was for. I removed the top of my cup and it also had one. We can not figure what its for. HELP! Thanks, bobt

That prong is a feature of the Empress brand dope cup cap. The base should have a spring clip, the prong tightens into it to keep the cap from vibrating and un-screwing as your T shakes and wiggles down the road

If the base is missing the spring, could be the cap was a replacement. The Empress brand was std. on the Fordson too.

Every T I've owned has had one of those.

These were standard on the TT rear axle outer bearings.

There were a number of designs for retaining the cups. I have never lost one on a T but have on another vehicle. I wonder how big a problem this was or was it just a sales ploy?

When did I do that?
